IT job watch for 2007
Here is some good job news that might be of interest to prospective IT students and graduates.
- Computer World "IT staff increase set for 2007" Jan 2007
Overall, the employment outlook for both the information technology and telecommunications industries looks promising for 2007 with many IT companies in Australia planing to increase their permanent staff. - The Age "IT Sexy again as online job ads hits record" Oct 2006
Reports that recruitment in IT was leaping ahead of the pack to regain its position from the late '90s. - The Age "Computer Experts lead job exodus from Sydney" Nov 2006
Worth reading why 16,000 computer professionals have left Sydney. The authors also point to the large numbers of temporary IT staff and "the trend towards offshoring IT contract services" but this didnt explain why new computing jobs were rapidly created elsewhere in Australia. - Computer World "Victorias ability to host high-tech jobs questioned" Jan 2007
Seems as if the recent growth in IT jobs is largely domestically driven and skewed by Government recruiting, population growth and the real estate boom, and not global competitiveness. Some doubts also raised at Victoria's current economy sustaining the production of new hi-tech jobs and maintaining a global competitive edge in the future. Suggested we could do better in Victoria by working closer with existing IT companies.
Victoria is an leading contributor to open source software so I was interested to read of a Vic company called Squiz that
repackaged their software license to take advantage of this commercial edge. Last year, Kevork kindly set up a new
mailing list for Open Source that teachers can subscribe to.
