MogileFS Maintenance
Hey LJers, I just wanted to let you all know that we are going to be performing some mogilefs maintenance over the next few days. We will be upgrading our current version to latest stable as well as changing some db config information to better handle the amount of files we are currently hosting. This shouldn't cause a big impact on site stability, but you may see some minor delays with userpic / scrapbook images appearing or other requests associated with our mogilefs. We would love to not have that happen, but unfortunately with some of the steps we need to take we have to cause a delay with images. I figured this was a better solution than taking down all of LiveJournal because well lets face it, we all need our daily LJ fix ;) Thanks, Current Mood: dirtyCurrent Music: Bad Religion - Stranger Than Fiction |

A while ago, someone anonymously mailed me a CD of a soundtrack they made to play along to my balloon comic, complete with little sound effects and everything It's one of the neatest things anyones ever done in response to something I've drawn. Every time one of the tracks come on shuffle, I feel awesome Heres one of my fav tracks (all the tracks are super short but flow together like a whole song) Won't upload the whole soundtrack 'cause the person never told me their name, so I can't credit them. lemme know if this player doesn't show up: http://emmy.eviltrailmix.com/audio/09Track9.mp3 |

Happy Thanksgiving!
To all my friends here, old and new: The best Thanksgiving Day to you! Perhaps you'll join the great repast And then, recovering, will fast... But some, less fortunate, can't share The bounty and the family fare To all thus situated, know That to you, too, my thoughts will go Some friends here hail from far away Thanksgiving's not a special day But know that, in your distant spots You feature highly in my thoughts The year has brought unhappy tricks Economies, and politics Place these aside now, if you could And ponder all you have that's good The best "place" is, perhaps, within: Such visits are where hopes begin So, more than turkey, quail, or dove Find peace, and joy, and friends, and love. ===|==============/ Level Head |

LiveJournal Major Notes: Security, Mobile, Facebook, Writer's Block, and Notes
Tweaks and enhancements
- In order to improve site security, we've temporarily suspended the ability to change passwords for old email addresses that haven't been used for over six months. For further information and support, please visit our customer care page.
- We've launched a new mobile site with an enhanced UI at m.livejournal.com. View spotlights, post to your journal, read and post to friends pages, and more, no matter where you roam! Please let us know what you think, since this will eventually replace our existing mobile interface. You can update your mobile preferences on your account page.
- We've upgraded from Beacon to Facebook Connect to improve dual posting. If you've already signed up for Facebook Beacon, you're good to go. If you wish to update your Facebook Connect setting, visit Account Privacy settings and scroll down to the option labeled: "Send information about my updates to Facebook." You can choose Always or Ask each time. Remember to save (on the bottom left corner of the page). To learn more, check out FAQ 249. While we're on the subject, if you happen to be visiting that side of town, please join our Facebook fan page for a touch of home away from home.
- You'll now receive the Writer's Block Question of the Day in the body of email notifications. To sign up for Writer's Block notifications, visit
writersblock and choose the Watch Community option. Next, update your Writer's Block notification settings by checking the box to the right of "Someone posts a new entry to writersblock."
- Paid and permanent users can now view, add, and edit Notes of commenters. Notes will appear beside the username of comment posters (instead of stars) on S1-themed comment pages.
Send some lovin' thanks to your friends with our holiday vgifts!
Photos of the weekWe're so delighted with the immense talent of our growing, global lj_photophile community that we've decided to introduce a poll. Each week, we'll choose a half-dozen photos (based on user comments and staff feedback) and ask you to select a photo of the week. The winning photo will be announced in the next newsletter. If possible, please limit photo size to 350x350 to ensure that images display properly on friends pages. We want to thank you again (and again!) for sharing your passion.
Check out this week's photo poll and more fantastic user content after the jump!

Thanksgiving preparations
Never begrudge the rain. If it rains, don't say: Oh no, it has ruined my party. We need rain. Saturday will be my Thanksgiving Day. And it is going to rain. We need rain. My little Unit is, well, little. Tomorrow, I pick up the turkeys. Today I clean the house and start the cooking. Always some nervousness about a function like this. So many people. It all comes together. Yet, I worry. |

ClimateGate non-coverage
For the "there is no media bias" friends reading: The story broke last Thursday of thousands of documents from the UK's Climate Research Unit. Those emails from Hadley CRU bragged about deleting information rather than submitting to a Freedom of Information request, and adjusting temperature charts, and so far have offered hundreds of examples of non-scientific bad behavior. Moreover, the source code and internal correspondence about it shows that the programmers regularly fake data and even they don't consider the world's climate records to be reliable at all. BBC and papers in the UK carried large stories immediately. Various independent news agencies did. The Associated Press authored a couple of small, dismissive articles, and talked about the word "trick" being misunderstood in a single email. The AP hasn't bothered to notice the Senate investigation being planned into this. But on ABC's news channel: Nothing. CBS: Nothing. MSNBC: Nothing. The New York Times carried a brief article by Andy Revkin saying that the NYT will not print material that was not intended to be made public. (Their practice seems to change if the information is harmful to, say, the War on Terror.) ( Read more... ) |

Out for a bit
I may be away from the computer for a little while; if I am unable to respond to your comments, it doesn't mean I don't care! Timing of my return is something I'm unable to judge at the moment. In the meantime, I've made a number of posts in the Global_Warming community related to the leaked/exposed/hacked Hadley CRU files. I'll put future posts related to that material over there. I expect that there are many more curiosities in the files (which I believe are authentic). If you're interested, please feel free to join that community.===|==============/ Level Head |

FOIA2009: The Database of Dubious Provenance
This is from the Hadley CRU files leaked/hacked. Most focus is on the emails, but the programming code is quite interesting as well. By the way, I am resisting mightily the lyrics that the title suggests. But those familiar with "Man of La Mancha" (and my own style of poetry) might be able to imagine it. The file is HARRY_READ_ME.txt, and it recounts a programmer's years of work as he struggles to understand the source code behind a climate data system. It is full of his frustrations with the amazingly bad/undocumented/unworkable code left behind be a former programmer. (An amusing note: The former programmer was a member of the South Park Evangelical Church.) Here is Harry writing about what to do when the data isn't there or is "unpalatably inconsistent." His reluctant conclusion: Allow the user to force it anyway. ( Read more... ) |

FOIA2009: "I'll delete the file rather than send to anyone."
Ah -- this was in the wrong place. There are many interesting examples posted around the web now -- including a few I put up at the Global_Warming community. More from the FOIA2009 collection of emails between climate scientists. You never know who is trawling...(from this file) At 09:41 AM 2/2/2005, Phil Jones wrote: Mike, I presume congratulations are in order - so congrats etc !
Just sent loads of station data to Scott. Make sure he documents everything better this time ! And don't leave stuff lying around on ftp sites - you never know who is trawling them. The two MMs [McKittrick and McIntyre -- LH] have been after the CRU station data for years. If they ever hear there is a Freedom of Information Act now in the UK, I think I'll delete the file rather than send to anyone. Does your similar act in the US force you to respond to enquiries within 20 days? - our does ! The UK works on precedents, so the first request will test it.
We also have a data protection act, which I will hide behind. Tom Wigley has sent me a worried email when he heard about it - thought people could ask him for his model code. He has retired officially from UEA so he can hide behind that. IPR should be relevant here, but I can see me getting into an argument with someone at UEA who'll say we must adhere to it ! I edited the whitespace, and applied the colors. ===|==============/ Level Head |

LiveJournal Major Notes: Postcard winners, Tweaks, LJ_Cares
Postcard winners! We wish to extend our heartfelt gratitude for sending so much joy our way. Frank is still blushing with excitement over the love notes, proposals, propositions, and occasional intimate photos sent from his admirers around the world (China, Norway, Japan, and Poland just this week)! At his request, we blindfolded Justin, one of Frank's BFFs, spun him around in five dozen counterclockwise circles, and asked him to point to ten random postcards/envelopes pasted to the wall. After a brief trip to the bathroom, he chose the following lucky winners, to whom we will give a six-month paid account token (for paid, basic, and plus users) or, for our permanent account holders, a $15 voucher for the LiveJournal gift shop.

So, without further ado, the winners are: seraphene
