Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas to all who observe Even any or no faith will serve For enjoying Yuletide Is just what you decide May you get everything you deserve And of other faiths and celebrations May they please those in rapt contemplations Of the times of the past May your bright future last And be ready with fast demonstrations There were challenges during the year But so far, we have made it to here May I say in this letter Let next year be better! May it bring peace and joy without fear ===|==============/ Level Head |

gym on a hot day
I like the Wednesday gym class. Last Wednesday was stinking hot. So, no go. Yesterday was the same. But I gotta stop feeling like a slug, so off I went. Many of us had that look of agony on our faces. How do we keep going? Back into my car with no A/C. Still, glad I went. |

Polenta Scoffins Originally published at KatteKrab. Please leave any comments there.
Scone Muffins = Scoffins
I had an idea of trying to make scones with polenta (course corn meal) using a cream scone recipe. The dough ended up being a bit too gloopy, probably because the polenta is not as absorbent as flour, and so I spooned the mixture into a muffin tray to bake them, instead of rolling and cutting as you normally would with scones. I was quite surprised how well they turned out, although I do believe they needed another 5-10 mins baking - so I've added that extra time below. You may need to vary this a little depending on your oven.
1 cup polenta 1 cup self raising flour 1 teaspoon of salt 1 teaspoon baking powder 200 mls pure cream (avoid thickened cream, as it usually contains gelatine or vegetable thickeners) up to 1 cup of milk
Pre-heat oven to 200c
Grease a 6 cup muffin tin, and line with a little extra corn meal
Sift the flour, then mix all the dry ingredients together in a large bowl. Pour in the cream and stir through quickly, then pour in a little of the milk at a time until you reach a gooey doughy consistency. But don't stir it too much, you're aiming to just combine all the ingredients, not create a smooth dough. Spoon the mixture into the muffin moulds, and bake for 20-25 mins, until a test skewer comes out clean, and the tops are burnished golden.
Eat them with chutney and creamy cheeses, or sliced meats. Chutney and brie works surprisingly well as a replacement for the jam and cream you might usually have with a scone.

cellphones and manners
I know I am becoming a recluse. I am also a person with few friends. So be it. Acceptance. Some of my lovely friends are hubs of networking and have big families. Last night I got invited to tea. There were 5 of us: Irv and his wife, Penny; their son, Jordan; and their cousin Aaron. Fine. Great conversations. Penny's mobile rings. She takes it at the dinner table but then goes off to another part of the loungeroom to finish the call. Then Irv's mobile rings. He talks and then gets up to finish the conversation. Meanwhile, Penny has returned but Jordan's phone rings. He talks loudly at the table while the rest of us are having a chat. Sure enough, Aaron's grown son rings him and Aaron is deep in discussion at the table. All through this, other phonecalls intruded. They took them at the table or got up. Me, I have a phone with no features and it sits in my handbag. Yeah, I'm gonna buy an iPhone, as all my friends had (have!), with my first paycheque from the new place of employment. I wonder if I will leave it in my bag or not. These are dear friends. When I speak to Penny, daily, she often puts me on hold while she answers another call. I wait. I wait b/c this is who she is. But I felt annoyance at times. Impatience also. I shoved those emotions away since this is the state of play for these friends. Since I don't go out much (my choice), I wonder if others experience the same awkwardness at the loss of 'good manners' when a guest is at the table. Am I old-fashioned? I was grateful, however, that no television was also competing for listening rights. That probably made up for the phonecalls. Current Mood: perplexed |

The Resurgence of Communism
My Lady Anne recorded a History Channel presentation for me last night. She knew it would annoy me -- I am a history buff, among other things. But I was more than annoyed, I recognized it -- and dug into the current background. The film is based on a textbook that is not-very-sly communist propaganda. The textbook has been taught in college courses for many years, and is now appearing in schools: "A People’s History of the United States" by Howard Zinn. Here's what the communists say about Howard Zinn: ( Zinn ... has radicalized many thousands of people. ) |
